Best Golf Bag: What Survives Bouncing Around in a Cart

I've owned more golf bags than I care to count, and most of them die the same way: the legs give out, the zippers seize, or the top gets so flimsy that clubs turn into a pile of spaghetti the second you hit a bump. The ASK ECHO T-Lock is the best golf bag I've tested because it solves the one problem every cart bag has: clubs that rattle and twist into a mess. It's $199.99, and after a full season, I'd pay it again.

Pros

Cons

Compared to the Callaway Chase 14

The Callaway Chase 14 is a solid bag, and I've spent rounds with both. The Chase has a better pocket layout, and the cooler pocket actually keeps things cold. But the 14-way top on the Callaway is a traditional molded top, not a locking mechanism. After a bumpy cart ride, my wedges were twisted and crossed in the Callaway. The ASK ECHO's T-Lock top kept everything in place. The Callaway is $204.24, and it's a good bag, but the ASK ECHO does the one thing a cart bag should do better: it keeps your clubs organized.

Design

The T-Lock top is the story here. You press a button, the top splits open, and you slide your clubs in. Release the button and the dividers clamp down, locking each club into its own slot. It's not a gimmick. I've had this bag in the back of my car for three months, bouncing around with my push cart and a bag of range balls, and the top still locks tight. The 14-way dividers run the full length of the bag, so there's no snagging at the bottom. I've regripped a thousand clubs, and I can tell you from the repair side that full-length dividers are the difference between a bag that lasts two years and one that lasts five.

The material is a heavy-duty nylon that's shrugged off rain and the occasional scrape against a cart frame. The base is molded plastic, and after a season of being dropped on pavement, it's still solid. No cracks, no flex.

Performance

I've played 30-plus rounds with this bag. It holds 14 clubs comfortably, and the locking top means I don't have to re-organize my bag after every hole. The putter well is separate, which is nice. The cooler pocket holds four cans and keeps them cold for a full round. The towel ring is in a useful spot, not buried behind a pocket flap. The cart strap pass-through is wide enough that I don't have to fight to get the strap around it.

The one thing I'll flag: the legs aren't there. I knew that going in, but it's worth repeating. This bag lives on a cart. If you're a walker, get a stand bag.

Durability

I've owned this bag for six months. The zippers still run smooth, the locking mechanism still clicks with authority, and the stitching shows no signs of wear. My buddy bought the Shopsource bag at $128.13, and after two months, the zipper on his main pocket is starting to catch. You can feel the difference in the zipper quality. The ASK ECHO uses a heavier zipper, the kind that doesn't snag. The Shopsource is a fine budget option, but it's not in the same durability class.

The Taylormade Classic Stand bag at $179.99 is a different animal. It's a stand bag, so it's lighter and easier to carry, but the clubs shift more on a cart. The legs are a weak point on any stand bag, and the Taylormade is no exception. It's a good walking bag, but it's not a cart bag.

Value

At $199.99, the ASK ECHO T-Lock is not the cheapest option. The Shopsource is $128.13, and the 15-way organizer is $109.99. But the ASK ECHO does something the cheaper bags don't: it locks your clubs in place. That's the core function of a cart bag, and it nails it. The ASK ECHO 3.0 is $206.99, and for the extra $7, you get a slightly updated top and some minor pocket tweaks. I'd save the $7 and get the original.

The Callaway Chase 14 is $204.24, and it's a good bag. But the locking top on the ASK ECHO is the difference-maker. I've had clubs cross and tangle in the Callaway. I've never had that problem with the ASK ECHO.

Should you buy it?

If you ride in a cart and you're tired of pulling your clubs apart like a tangled necklace, yes. The ASK ECHO T-Lock is the best golf bag for cart players because it solves the one problem every cart bag has. If you walk, get a stand bag. If you're on a tight budget, the Shopsource will work, but expect to replace it sooner.

I've had mine since March, and I'll update this review if anything changes. Right now, it's the bag I reach for every round. Next I'm testing the ASK ECHO 3.0 to see if the $7 upgrade is worth it. I'll report back.
